LWML and Lutheran World Relief

The Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) is currently collecting personal hygene items for distribution worldwide by Lutheran World Relief (LWR).  A complete list of items being collected is located on the table in the back of our sanctuary.  This is a vital ministry and mission of the LWML.  Items collected will be sent around the world to people with the greatest need.  Giving to the LWML drive is a way to reach people in places you may never visit.

Joplin, Missouri

A group of men from our congregation went to Joplin, Missouri early in 2012 to assist with their recovery from the devastating tornado that hit that area in 2011.  We worked there for three days through Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin.  We also partnered with Lutheran Church Charities.

Southeast Asia

Pastor Taylor and his good friend, Rev. Paul Nielsen, made a trip in 2010 to Southeast Asia to teach a group of Lutheran Pastor's and Deaconesses assembled in Medan, Indonesia.  The trip was made possible by individual donors.  The work was "sponsored" by the Lutheran Heritage Foundation who translates Lutheran materials into various languages around the world.  The trip to Medan was to introduce "A Summary of Christian Doctrine" by Edward Khoeler which was recently translated into the Bahasa language.

Follow up work was also done in Bangkok and Chaing Mai, Thailand, as well as in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  Our congregation collected funds to help with two humanitarian projects in Southeast Asia.  We put in three wells and three bathroom facilities in villages in Cambodia.  Prior to this project the villages had neither.  One of the villages is pictured below.  It is on the eastern border of Cambodia near Viet Nam.

A second trip was made to Indonesia in October 2012.  Seminars were taught in Medan, Siantar, and on Nias Island.  Pastors from Indonesia came to a seminar on "The Lutheran Reformation and Its impact on the Church Today."  Each of the three seminars was attended by 30 to 40 pastors.

If you would like to make a contribution to the mission efforts in Southeast Asia you may send checks, made out to "St. John Lutheran Church," to 1121 39th St. , Galveston, Tx. 77550.  Please mark checks for "Southeast Asia Mission."  Gifts, of course, are completely tax deductible and are very much appreciated.

Luther Heritage Foundation

For many years we have supported the Lutheran Heritage Foundation.  LHF translates Lutheran theological materials into other languages around the world.
